Special Shapes |
Hot air balloons have always captured imaginations with their huge, yet gentle appearance and vibrant colors, but special shape balloons take this wonder to a whole new level. Unlike traditional teardrop balloons, special shapes are designed to resemble almost anything you can imagine - animals, characters, famous landmarks, vehicles, or even everyday objects like bottles and cans!
These unique creations push the boundaries of ballooning engineering. Designers and balloon pilots work together to turn whimsical ideas into flying realities, balancing creativity with the practical challenges of flight. Special shape balloons often require multiple compartments, extra panels, and careful weight distribution to maintain stability in the air. Their unusual forms can make inflation, launch, and landing more complicated than for standard balloons - but, I'm sure you will agree, the results are worth it!
You will be able to get within touching distance of some of our historic special shaped balloons in our Cameron Hot Air Balloon Arena. Named after Don Cameron MBE, the founder of the world's largest Hot Air Balloon manufacturer, Cameron Balloons, based in Bristol, the Arena is the perfect place to learn more about ballooning and see some of these affectionate giants. Our expert balloon commentator Mark 'Lockers' Lockwood, who designed a number of these aircraft, will be on hand to explain what’s going on and you will even be able to get to talk to some of the crews about their hot air balloon experiences, as well as jump in their baskets for some photos!
